Here’s how it works: An individual or small business can deposit a premium into a smart contract, defining the exact event, timeframe, and payout. For instance, a farmer could buy a policy insuring their crops against temperatures dropping below 0°C for more than two consecutive hours on a particular night. A concert promoter could insure against rainfall exceeding a certain threshold during their outdoor event, or a logistics company against a specific supply chain disruption.

The contract is linked to a reliable data oracle (e.g., weather data, IoT sensors, market price feeds). If the specified conditions are met and verified by the oracle, the contract automatically executes, and the payout is sent directly to the policyholder. If the event does not occur, the premium, or a portion of it, could be returned to a community pool or used to fund future policies, as defined by the contract rules.

This approach dramatically reduces administrative costs and eliminates the lengthy claims process, providing instant, trustless payouts. It opens up a new frontier for risk management, allowing individuals, startups, and specific industries to mitigate highly granular risks that were previously uninsurable, fostering resilience and innovation across various sectors.
