The top two YouTube channels—Pewdiepie(Felix Kjellberg) and T Series(a media corporation) have been neck and neck in a battle for top subscriber count. It has spurred on antics like fans handing out flyers, hacking printers, and payment for Times Square billboards. All to help Pewdiepie stay ahead of the Indian media giant, and all done unbeknownst to Pewdiepie himself. I guess it’s easy to take sides against a faceless media giant, and fans are having fun with it.
Felix has said himself that doesn’t care in the end if T series takes his number one spot, but appreciates all the support and is enjoying the antics. He’s having some fun with it too.
Of course, T series has only responded with a continued flow of well-choreographed music videos. The president that heads the digital department, has claimed “It’s a matter of pride for all Indians that our channel take number 1” and “No one can hold back the power of good music.” However, mirroring Pewdiepies mixed sentiment insisted “We’re not in a competition.”
This supposed “non-competition” may have stepped up a notch.
We recently came in contact with an anonymous insider who claims to be aware of an unannounced “Pewdiepie India Tour”. This may be the latest publicity stunt in order to stay ahead of T series. It’s unclear what the specifics of the tour are, but will no doubt include a fan appreciation event. It might also include some philanthropy, since Pewdiepie has donated to CRY, an effort to help child laborers in India. It makes sense, Pewdiepie has covered trips to Japan and Singapore in the past.
